Title:
The Physical Geography of Russia

10 minutes to complete cartoons from last session.

Q1 From your cartoon time line... what evidence tells us that Russia has gone through enormous conflict and change?

Q2 Russia is governed from Moscow. Using information on page 107, can you suggest three reasons why Russia was difficult to govern?

Entry Activity:
What do we mean by physical geography?

What is the physical geography in this image?

HERE

(Above already done... quick review).

Key Terms:

Plain - An expanse of relatively flat land
Plateau - An elevated (high altitude) plain
Mountain Range - A set of mountains forming a line
River - A linear (in a line) flow of fresh water descending from a source in high land into lower land. Where it enters either the sea or a lake is called the river mouth.
Lake - A body or expanse of fresh water. Rivers often flow in and out of it.
Sea - An area of salt water of relatively smaller size than an ocean e.g. the Mediterranean Sea
Ocean - A large body of salt water such as the Atlantic

1. Using the text pp 110 and 111, plus the map provided, make an A3 poster about the physical geography of Russia. You will need to stick your map into the middle of the A3 sheet and then add annotations and sketches about the physical features you have chosen.

Title:
Russia's Climatic Zones

Entry Activity:
What do we mean by the term "climate" and how does it differ from the term "weather"?

Key Terms:
Weather -
Climate -
Biome -

Notes:

"Climate" refers to the average weather conditions that are expected at a certain place during a given season/time of year.

Climate varies from place to place at a global scale. This is why many British people travel to southern countries for their summer holidays as they know it will be hotter and drier than the UK.

Russia is so enormous that it possesses several different climate zones. These are caused by three key factors:

   1. Latitude ie distance from the equator.
   2. Altitude ie height above sea level.
   3. Distance from the sea (places further from the    sea tend to experience more extreme seasonal        differences and are often drier).

Activities:
1. From the text book (pp 112 and 113) - answer questions 1, 2 and 3.

Copy the following notes:
Different climates (especially precipitation and temperature) affect the dominant natural vegetation of an area. A biome is a region that shares a similar vegetation type and, thus, climate.

For NL:

Activities:
2. Using the text book to help you, describe the main  type of the vegetation and climate of the following biomes found in Russia (Add a sketch to show the main type of environment and vegetation):

  • Tundra
  • Taiga
  • Steppe
  • Temperate forest
  • Mountain forest/steppe

Title:
Russia's Population

Entry Activity:
Population is all about people. What kinds of "people information" might geographers be interested in?

Key Terms:
Population - Is often about people in geography. For example, how many there are, where they live, how their numbers are changing etc
Line graph - A graph that plots the relationship between two variable as a line. Often the horizontal line is time.
Located bar graph - Bar graphs that have been associated with specific places on a map to show differences between locations.

Image result for located bar graph

Firstly today you have some...Finishing Off Work to DO...
Complete tasks 4, 5 and 6 from the text pp 113.

Population Activities:This is skills work - you are going to work in PAIRS to make two graphs:

1. Located bar graph onto map to show pop. of Major Cities in Russia... and,

2. A line graph to show how Russia's total population has changed since 1950.

You will need drawing equipment, colours, graph paper...

Data and Map HERE

To complete NL + writing interpretations (BUG and PEEL) etc...

Written Assignment re. Population Graphs:

1. Describe how Russia's population has changed since 1950   (6 Marks)

2. Describe the distribution of Russia's biggest cities and suggest reasons for the pattern you have identified.    ( 9 Marks and 3 SPG)

Assessment Feedback

Entry Activity:
Return and review assessments + comments.

Key Terms:

1. Describe how Russia's population has changed since 1950 (6 Marks)

The line graph shows that Russia's population has grown from 102 million in 1950 to 147 million in 2020(estimate). This is an overall increase of 45 million people in 70 years.

This growth has not, however, been consistent. From 1990 to 2010, the population decreased from a high of 148 million down to 143 million (a fall of 5 million in 20 years). Since 2010, though, numbers have begun to rise again.

2. Describe the distribution of Russia's biggest cities and suggest reasons for the pattern you have identified. ( 9 Marks and 3 SPG)

On the located bar graph mapping we can see that the most densely populated areas of Russia are in the west and south west (population densities of 10 to 100 people per kilometer squared). This is also where the biggest cities are mostly found, for example, the capital Moscow with a population of 11.5 million and St Petersburg (Russia's second city) with a population of 4.9 million.

Eight of the twelve biggest cities are located in this area called the "East European Plain". This is likely to be because the climate in this area of Russia is more pleasant with plenty of rain and warm/hot summers - although winters can still be very cold. These conditions are not only more pleasant to live in (attracting more people), but also support the best food production due to the weather and the deep fertile soils of the Steppe (grasslands) and Temperate Forest areas. Without the ability to grow lots of food, it would be very difficult for large cities to develop.

So, we can see that Russia's population is unevenly spread and so, too, are its biggest cities with the west of the country overall having the most dense populations and largest cities.
